Dating from the early 1600s but given a Georgian facelift late in the next century, No 3 Queen Street originally formed, with its neighbour, a single residence which has, in its time, been home to Mrs M Rayley, founder of the Sailor's Reading Room, Dr Collings, founder of Southwold Museum, and the Blairs - you may have heard of their son, aka George Orwell! Grade II Listed, today it's a comfortable holiday home with a wealth of period features and plenty of space for a party of six... plus an unbeatable central location.

Bedrooms and bathrooms
Well-chosen furnishings and fine detailing set the scene for peaceful slumbers here. On the first floor you'll find lavish window treatments, an en-suite shower room and enticing king size in the first bedroom, while in the second there's an attractive double bed and feature floorboards. Climb an open staircase, with handrail to the top floor and there's a twin-bedded room full of original interest, including structural beams and a fireplace. A ground floor bathroom brings the conveniences to full complement.

Cooking and dining
Force yourself away from the squashy sofas and magnificent open fireplace in the panelled sitting room and you'll find a kitchen that's ultra-modern, well equipped and equally colourful. Clean lines and clever design deliver everything a cook needs, including electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. A separate dining room has feature floorboards and space for all to eat with ease.

Doors from the dining room lead onto a private paved courtyard garden complete with furniture for outdoor living.

Roadside parking is available nearby and two well-behaved pet is welcome. There's a travel cot and highchair for younger guests' use, and a starter pack is provided for the open fire.

We loved staying here
