A family’s keen eye for sympathetic conservation has given this gorgeously big cottage a whole new lease of life and guarantees happy home-from-home holidays for generations to come. In the same ownership for four decades, many of its traditional features are now complemented by on-trend, high-end fixtures together with a range of characterful and comfortable furnishings.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

A small hallway off the utility room leads via two shallow steps into a double bedroom that’s carpeted for underfoot comfort and has a half-glazed door into the courtyard garden. The en suite white-tiled shower room matches perfectly the mood of the bedroom, which comes complete with a metal bed frame and soothing colour scheme. Upstairs, the same attention to detail is evident in four further bedrooms, the first of which has a king-sized bed, built-in wardrobe with hanging space and shelves and an original fireplace, while two more have twin beds and windows overlooking the courtyard. These three rooms have easy access to a spacious family bathroom, the centerpiece of which is a beautiful roll-top bath set off by a pretty pastel colour scheme; there’s a separate shower cubicle in here, too. To the rear of the property and also with courtyard garden views, the final bedroom is a cosy double with its own en suite shower room. Every bedroom has USB ports and a TV, and there’s a heated towel rail in each bathroom. A ground floor cloakroom adds an extra convenience to big-group living here and is located in the middle hallway of the cottage, where a second carpeted staircase leads to the first floor.

Cooking and dining

A newly-fitted galley-style kitchen has cool coastal hues and a luxurious range of fitted cabinets, all well lit thanks to the wealth of Crittal-type windows and a glazed door which leads to the courtyard garden beyond. Attention to detail is evident here, from the Karndean tiled flooring that leads to the cloakroom, utility room and rear hallway, to the electric double oven and grill, induction hob, integrated fridge/freezer, dishwasher, water softener and microwave. Two USB ports and a Bluetooth soundbar allow entertainment while you work, and there’s plenty to appreciate in the separate dining room where you’ll find table, chairs and bench seating for ten and more windows onto the courtyard – outdoor furniture here allows for some al fresco feasting too.

A picture window street-side hints at the home’s previous importance as a stationery shop and barber’s and offers an excellent view of the Lighthouse opposite – unwind in the window seat and watch the world go by! Today, a covered passageway leads to the main entrance and on to the rear of the property and its paved courtyard garden. Here you’ll find tables and chairs for al fresco dining, an outside tap and washing line, plus doors directly into the kitchen and ground floor bedroom.

Smart TVs in the bedrooms and sitting room coupled with USB ports in electric sockets, a DVD player, free WiFi and an Alexa in full-time residence all point to the on-trend credentials of this deceptively large holiday home. Bed linen and towels are provided, there’s a travel cot and wooden highchair available for the comfort of younger guests, and one well-behaved dog is welcome to holiday here too. On-street parking is permitted and everything you’ll be doing while in Southwold is within an easy walk – including the popular Sole Bay Inn which is just a few steps along the street.
